BACON FESTIVAL is back at CUCKOO CALLAY! - Newtown

Cuckoo Callay's BACON FESTIVAL is back! Having been success with last year's festival, this year Cuckoo brings it into a bigger scale that happened on last Saturday the 27th at Central Park, Chippendale together with other Sydney's favorites serving up their special bacon inspired dishes and of course, BACON BEER!

Well, I have a good news for some of you who didn't manage to make it to the Bacon Brewfest.. Cuckoo will continue its bacon galore for 12 weeks starting from the 1st of March offering 8 different dishes utilizing bacon into a new dish (not just as a side) and bacon coma is definitely guaranteed upon leaving this place.

Without further ado, let's start talking about their taste bud's challenging dishes!

If you ask me what's my favorite dish of all those 8 specials - it must be this Bacon Mac Daddy! Delicious double smoked bacon topped with creamy bacon mac and cheese, perfectly cooked fried egg (yes with the runny yolk!) in a light and flaky croissant! The outside shatters into crispy shards and the inside is soft enough to hold the creamy gooey fillings and not to mention the superb sweet savory bacony tomato jam! Farewell ordinary ham and cheese croissant, I'll be a nice daddy's little girl for the next 12 weeks!

Need more bacon? How about this 4 in 1 Bacon All The Rules combo! Truly thick and savory piece of hearty bacon steak, juicy bite of flower bacon sausage, maple bacon, double smoked bacon, and poached eggs on toasted sourdough. I guess it's just perfect when I call it a delicious high-protein gourmet right?

Pig Deal Fritter - Double Smoked Bacon, Feta and Zucchini Fritters, Bacon Jam, Jalapeno, Avocado Corn Salsa and a Poached Egg
Although it might looks heavy, this deep fried feta and zucchini fritters are as light and delicate as it can be. It's slightly crisp on the outside while soft on the inside and served with avocado corn salsa on the side. The avocado lends a smooth creaminess and the jalapeno gives extra spicy kick but not overtaking the corn sweetness.

Pig in a Box
This treasure bacon box has pork and camembert filling more like a meatloaf. The inside is tasty and very moreish when eaten with the creamy and somewhat cheesy spinach puree. Served with juicy roasted truss tomatoes, poached egg and sweet tomato jam, I think I'd like this one even more if the "bacon skin" was crispier.

Let me tell you this one is called Fooled Pork Burger, well no pun intended, but this one is 100% vegetarian as the fooled pork is basically jackfruit! Getting used to eat jackfruits being cooked in many ways back in my hometown, I won't say the texture is 100% like the real pulled pork - but it's quite similar as it's simmered in sauce until fall apart tender. Coated in melted gruyere cheese and Asian slaw, this burger is quite satisfying but let's be honest.. I still prefer meat with my burger bun!

Cherry Good Belly
I hope the photo does the justice but this Cherry Good Belly is actually juicy fat layers of glazed pork belly on top of bacon potato rosti and served with sour cherry sauce and chargrilled brocollini. I feel like the overall taste is too sweet and you might disagree with me but if it's less sweet and tasted fresher with more herbs - this could be my next favorite!

There's always room for BACON as desserts! This Devil-ish Doughnut has creamy house-made bacon and caramel ice cream, smooth peanut butter mousse and double smoked bacon sandwiched and salted peanut caramel drizzle in between "Milk Bar by Cafe Ish" Cinnamon Doughnut. Warm and cold, sweet and salty, crusty and yet chewy, those are all the sensations when you have every single element in one go.

My Sweet Valenswine
It's already the beginning of March but let this Carrot Cake Waffle with Bacon and Cinnamon Ice Cream be a part of your sweet Valenswine. The waffle texture is quite heavy with strong hint of cinnamon and chewy for my liking. I, somehow, also think the maple bacon doesn't really go along with the other fruity and nutty elements, but this dish in overall looks so pretty and colorful right?

Fancy some bacon drink? Don't miss this Bacon Freakshake out! Pumpkin Pie and bacon Milkshake served with peanut butter, gingersnap biscuit and maple bacon! Don't know where to start? Grab the biscuit, the peanut butter, and take a sip of milky with delicate cinnamon infuses shake and chew the bacon maple afterwards!
